Rumah Melaka Rumah Melaka

In Malacca, the traditional Malay House is called the Rumah Melayu Melaka or Malacca Malay House. It can still be found in the whole of Malacca today. It is mainly recognized by its stone and multi-coloured tile steps which are imported from China and India. In its original form, the ‘rumah ibu' (main house) of the Malacca Malay House stands on 12 or 16 main posts. The structure is made up of the ‘rumah ibu', the ‘ruang tengah' (central section) and the ‘dapur' (kitchen).

The ‘rumah ibu' is made of the ‘serambi' (verandah) and at times an ‘anjung' (front room) is added, which has steps leading to it. In the ‘ruang tengah' is a room and separating the ‘rumah ibu' and the ‘dapur' is a passage called ‘selang'.

In the ‘ruang tengah', there is a ‘peran' (attic) used as a bedroom for the girls especially when there is a wedding ceremony and also, as a storage space. The Malacca Malay House is normally built with Cengal, Meranti and Damar Laut.
